Because I Know Him

1 Samuel 14:6-7 (BSB)
“Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”
Devotion

Jonathan, the son of King Saul, was a young leader, ready to launch out on his own. He planned to take his army and lead an attack on the Philistine camp without the help of King Saul’s men. Ready to put his leadership skills to the test, Jonathan took a calculated risk. He believed the odds were in his favor, simply because he feared God, and the victory would be obtained by Him.

In the natural, the Philistine army far outnumbered the men in his unit. This would not be a fair fight. In addition, the lay of the terrain placed his fighting uphill, which put his army at a terrible disadvantage. The passes he was to cross were marked with two intimidating sharp rocks named ‘Height’ and ‘Pointed’. But a man of faith does not see his circumstances as obstacles, only more evidence of a greater triumph. Jonathan spoke his faith out loud, ‘it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.’ One could say his confidence was steadfast. ‘It was because he knew Him’.

Just as impressive was Jonathan’s armor bearer. These assistants in biblical times were also men of faith, loyal, supportive, encouraging, tending to the needs of the ones they served, and faithful, even if it meant to the death. This bearer knew Jonathan believed in God. He trusted him and his judgment because of this and did not hesitate to express his allegiance to him completely. One could say, ‘it was because he knew him.’

Lessons could be learned from these two men. As the Body of Christ is being prepared and placed into position for God’s movement in these latter days, could we stand in fearless confidence, answering His call, knowing that the good work which He began in us, He will complete until the day of Jesus Christ? (Philipians 1:6) And for those who benefit from God’s servants who lead us in this hour, would we be faithful, loyal, encouraging and supporters of them? Can we be those people who answer in this hour, ‘Yes, because I know Him.’? “ … but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.” (Daniel 11:32b).

Today’s Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the God who saves, whether by many or by few. Like Jonathan, help me to trust in Your power rather than my own strength. Give me boldness to step out in faith, knowing that nothing can hinder Your plans. Strengthen my heart to stand firm, and make me a loyal and faithful supporter of those You have placed in leadership. May my life be a testimony of unwavering confidence in You. In the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Apply It Today

Step out in faith today, even when the odds seem against you. Trust that God’s power is not limited by numbers, circumstances, or human ability. Like Jonathan’s armor bearer, be an encouragement to those leading in faith, offer support, prayer, and unwavering loyalty as they follow God’s call. Let your actions declare, “Yes, because I know Him.”
