Better Is One Day

Psalm 84:10 (NIV)
“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”
Devotion
There is something profoundly powerful about someone who has seen the cost of disobedience and still chooses to draw near to God. The sons of Korah, who penned this psalm, knew exactly what it meant to live outside the will of God, and what it cost their family.
Their forefather, Korah, rebelled against God's appointed leadership, and along with others, perished when the earth opened and swallowed them (Numbers 16). But in an act of mercy, the sons of Korah were spared. And instead of following in the footsteps of rebellion, they dedicated their lives to service in the house of the Lord.
How humbling that these very sons, forever marked by their family’s history, would write, “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God…” They weren’t reaching for titles, nor longing for recognition. They simply wanted to be where God was.
In a world where comfort, convenience, and influence often pull us away from God’s will, this psalm is a reminder that being in His presence, even in the lowest position, is far better than living outside His will in the highest place.
The "tents of wickedness" may look appealing on the outside, but they are filled with compromise and emptiness. In contrast, even the threshold of God's house is rich with joy, peace, and purpose.
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Help me to treasure Your presence more than anything this world could offer. Like the sons of Korah, may I learn from the past and choose to serve You wholeheartedly. Even if it means simply holding the door in Your house, I know it's better than living in luxury apart from You. Draw me close, and keep me in the center of Your will. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
