Christ the Eternal Witness

Thursday, September 11

Joshua 24:27 (NIV)“See!” he said to all the people, “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”

Devotion

When Joshua placed a stone before the people of Israel, it was not just a symbol. It was a reminder that their words and commitments to God were not empty promises. That stone stood as a witness of their covenant. Throughout Scripture, we see the powerful role of stones in God’s dealings with His people.

Moses was commanded to strike the rock, and from it flowed water to sustain the Israelites in the desert (Exodus 17:6). This pointed to Christ, the Rock from whom living water flows to quench our thirsty souls. David picked up a stone from the brook, and with it he defeated Goliath, showing us that God uses even the smallest things to bring down giants (1 Samuel 17:40–49). The psalmist declared that “the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Psalm 118:22), a prophecy fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who was rejected by men but exalted by God as the foundation of our salvation. In the sermon, we learned that Christ, as the Eternal Witness, not only hears our commitments but testifies to our faithfulness before God’s throne, just as Joshua’s stone stood as a witness to Israel’s covenant.

Joshua’s stone was silent, yet it bore witness. How much more will Christ, the living Stone, bear witness when we stand before the throne of God? He is both our Advocate and our Judge. As Pastor Jentezen's sermon emphasized, Christ’s role as the Eternal Witness means He observes every choice we make. Will His testimony reflect a life aligned with His grace, as Joshua’s stone reminded Israel, or will it reveal unfaithfulness?

Today's Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the eternal witness of Jesus. May Jesus speak to me daily through his word and through the Holy Spirit. Remind me of all that the blood of Jesus has done for me. Remind me of my words and how my actions fail to live up to past promises to which Jesus bears witness. Remind me of all the things that are not right. Do not let me be surprised when I stand before Jesus. I kneel today and ask that you show me now so that I can do better. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

Take time today to examine your walk with Christ and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. Are you living in a way that will stand as a faithful witness when you appear before Him? Just as Joshua set a stone as a reminder, let Christ be the Rock you stand on daily. Live prepared, because one day you will present your report before the Lord.
