Flee From Sexual Immorality

Saturday, August 16

Proverbs 7:24-25 (NLT)
“So listen to me, my sons, and pay attention to my words. Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her. Don’t wander down her wayward path.”
Devotion

We are called to battle demons, to trample on snakes and scorpions; but, when it comes to temptations and sexual immorality, we are told to flee.

Joseph stood firm in his resolve to keep pure before God and flee from Potiphar’s wife and sexual immorality, and ended up in prison. But even in prison, he was favored by God and was eventually elevated to be the highest leader in Egypt, second to Pharoah.

There are numerous examples in the Bible where men were tempted, committed adultery and were led astray, and the consequences were devastating. Samson lost his sight, his strength and his favor from God. David lost his son and later the kingdom of Israel was divided. Mighty men lost their rightful place for giving in to their flesh and lost their standing before God.

The Bible warns to avoid the wayward woman and let not your heart stray toward her. The temptation to sin is never far away. And the call of the flesh is not something to take lightly, but we are commanded to flee and run from temptation, adultery and sexual immorality. Men, women, young and old alike are tempted by the devil to give in to the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. Many families have been broken because of an illicit affair that starts out with a work related alliance and blows out on your face. People’s lives are suddenly turned upside down. What seemed like an innocent coffee or smile to someone you find attractive becomes a temptation too great to shake off from your system and now plagues your waking hours, your dreams and even your sacred time with your spouse.

God commands us to “Flee from sexual immorality.” There is nothing good about lingering to watch like David over his balcony. There is no lasting pleasure from the sin of adultery. Desire to get wisdom. Look for lasting legacies to pass on to your children and your children's children. Build on 7 pillars that will sustain future generations. Choose to love your spouse, to love your family and love God above all. Our lives are intertwined and what we build today can either stand the test of time or crumble, when the foundations are built on lies and deception.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before You today to be thoroughly cleansed from all unrighteousness. Forgive me if I have strayed from You and moved towards pleasures of the flesh and not on eternal things. Forgive me for spending more time with co-workers or friends instead of building my relationship with my nuclear family. Lord help me build my home with the seven pillars that will last a lifetime and help me build a legacy of a family that faithfully serves You. You are my firm foundation and I put my trust in You. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

Worldly pleasure and quick gratifications of the flesh will always leave a bad taste on the mouth and on your whole being. Keep pure and holy before God. Ask the Holy Spirit to check your heart at all times and “flee” from all forms of temptations and even thoughts of sexual perversion or immorality. God sees all, and knows all things. Even when you think no one knows because no one saw, God knows. Today, choose to obey God in all things, loving your spouse, loving your children and your grandchildren, and living a legacy of hope and stability for generations to come.
