Going A Little Further
Monday, August 18
Mark 14:32-36 (NIV)
“They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Devotion
In Mark 14:32-36, Jesus leads his disciples to Gethsemane, a familiar place of prayer, but he goes "a little further" to pray alone. Jesus submitted to God's will despite his anguish. The disciples stayed in their familiar place, but Jesus’ extra effort aligned him with God’s plan for salvation.
Similarly, we are called to go beyond the ordinary—whether in prayer, worship, or obedience—to experience breakthroughs. By taking that extra step, like Jesus, we open ourselves to God’s transformative power.
Jesus pushed beyond comfort to seek God's presence and purpose. Let’s follow Jesus’ example to move past routine worship and prayer, and let’s challenge ourselves to step into deeper surrender and trust.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Help me go a little further in my faith, and help me to surrender fully to Your will. Grant me courage to step beyond comfort into Your presence. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Reflect on where you’ve grown comfortable in your faith—perhaps attending church weekly without engaging deeply or praying only when in need—and take one intentional step this week to go deeper, such as joining a small group, volunteering for a ministry, or setting aside daily time for focused prayer, trusting God for a breakthrough.
