Psalm 42:1-4, 7 (NKJV)
“To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, “Where is your God?” When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast. Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me.”
Devotion
Today’s scripture strongly describes a crying out to God from the depths of one’s heart — a “deep calling unto deep,” from our heart to His. There is no hiding here. Our hearts, laid bare before Him in desperation, ask Him to fill our thirsty soul with living water. We need His Presence because our souls have been parched by this dry land where no water is. God, in His faithfulness, at the sound of the waterspouts (our praise and worship), answers us with billows and billows of waves washing over us to quench our thirst.
Pastor Franklin spoke on Sunday of occasionally stepping into the unseen world of faith: a world that is not restricted by the circumstances of this world; a world that can access His Presence, His resources, His life.
Psalm 42 speaks of a direct communication to God from our soul. It is one thing to attend the house of the Lord, and it is another to close the door of our prayer closet and cry out to Him in private. The psalmist asks, “When shall I come and appear before You?” In the Old Testament, only the high priest could access God’s Presence within the Tabernacle (unless by a sovereign appearance, as God did with Moses). But now, in the new covenant, through the blood of Christ, all men — not just the clergy — can have access to His Presence. Through the blood covenant paid by Jesus, He entered the Presence behind the veil for us so that, through Him, we can now have access to the Heavenly Father at any time.
Jesus is the Door to the unseen world of faith, so there is no reason for not experiencing His Presence. The way has already been made.
Before Jesus ascended to the Heavenly Father, He described what eternal life really is. He said, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (John 17:3). The word “know” in this verse goes beyond intellectual knowledge and understanding. It is an intimacy of the heart and mind that only comes from a deep love relationship between two people. This is the type of relationship God wants with His people. He created us for this purpose.
Let us not hold back. Commune with Him. This is a divine exchange of love. Let our hearts be full. Let it overflow with His anointing, the evidence of having been in His Presence.
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I cry out to You with my voice. Hear me now as I pour out my heart before You. Quench my thirsty soul, for I desire You as in a dry and parched land. Pour out Your Spirit upon me, for I need You to touch my life, my family, and my home. Overflow me with Your life, for You are my God. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
