In The Presence Of God

Thursday, February 6

1 Samuel 20:42 (KJV)
“And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.”
Devotion
This is a glimpse of the covenant between Jonathan (Kings Saul’s first born) and soon to be king, David. They made a covenant that the LORD would forever be between them, and that same covenant would extend to their seeds forever.

Jonathan was “legally” next in line to be the King of Israel but because God was between him and David, Jonathan was able to see through the lens of God. Despite how Johnathan may have looked in the eyes of the people, unlike his father King Saul, rather than lean upon his own understanding, Jonathan submitted to God’s plan and willingly gave his personal armor, sword, bow, and belt to David symbolizing his acceptance of God’s plan to declare David as King of Israel. Jonathan remained humble and obedient through willfully giving up what was “legally” his. He remained faithful and in unity with David and God.

The power to remain faithful, have humility, and be selfless only comes by the presence of God. Therefore if we want to see a transformation in ourselves, in our workplaces, in our marriages, or things alike, we must be willing to allow God to come between us and all those things. Then we will see we also have the power to remain faithful and obedient no matter the cost.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the example of Jonathan’s humility and faithfulness. Help me to willingly surrender anything that stands in the way of Your purpose for my life. Teach me to trust Your plans above my own desires, and may Your presence be between me and everything I hold dear. Give me the strength to remain faithful and obedient, even when it’s difficult. Let my life reflect Your will and bring glory to Your name. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

Ask yourself: Have I truly allowed God to come between me and the things I hold dear? Just as Jonathan surrendered what was rightfully his to honor God's plan, choose to submit your desires, relationships, and decisions to God's presence. When He is at the center, you’ll find the grace to walk in humility, faithfulness, and obedience, even when it costs you something significant.
