Jesus Rescues His People

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
“...give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Devotion
In the eternal perspective, Jesus always rescues those who belong to Him. “Even if you don’t” is a fine sentiment from a mortal perspective, but the more accurate phrasing should be, “even if I don’t see it as soon as I’d like.” Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1). Jesus is with His people always, even in the fire.
If our rescue from sickness does not come in this life, we are immediately delivered from death through the resurrection power of Jesus as we pass on. If our rescue from persecution does not come in this life, we step into eternity onto streets paved with gold as we see the Lord Jesus face to face. There is no “if you don’t” for those who belong to Jesus. The only open question is which side of eternity a given rescue will happen on.
This is why we can give thanks in all circumstances. If there is no resurrection, we are to be pitied more than all men. For the joy set before Him, Jesus endured the cross, scorning its shame (Hebrews 12:2). Whatever our circumstances, including the pain and the shame, those who follow Jesus also have great joy set before us. We can look past the sickness, pain, shame, persecution, and trouble and give thanks that the blood of Jesus has reconciled us to God and that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
Giving thanks in all circumstances is God’s will for us. It takes our eyes off of ourselves and our circumstances. In good times, giving thanks helps us remember that the good times we enjoy are not of our own making but are blessings from the Father of heavenly lights (James 1:17). In more difficult times, giving thanks helps us remember that we can endure hardship as discipline (Hebrews 12:7) and that we have the joy of eternity with Jesus set before us.
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that our hope is secure in Jesus. Help us to trust Your perfect timing, give thanks in every circumstance, and keep our eyes fixed on the eternal joy that awaits us. Strengthen our faith to rest in the assurance that You are always with us and that Your rescue is certain. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
