Nonconformist

Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Devotion

The definition of a 'nonconformist' is someone who refuses to follow the culture of the day, the accepted customs and attitudes of a 'majority,' and instead remains true to their own beliefs and values.

Jesus calls us out of this world by having our minds transformed, replacing worldly perspectives with His truth. The way we are transformed in our minds is to have a solid foundation of what Scripture says. Even when the world condones behavior that God calls sin, we must be discerning and take a stand against sin. This directive is not only to change us from conforming to sinful ways outwardly. A purpose of renewing our minds is also so that we are no longer victims of the enemy's lies. When we align ourselves with God's Word, we will begin to see the world and ourselves through His eyes.

Being a nonconformist can be challenging if we are not accepted by others because of following Jesus. However, we should not base our self-worth on the opinions of others or on painful experiences. Negative mindsets cannot have a hold on us when we see ourselves and others through His Word and love for us.

In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Knowing truth by way of Scripture will renew our values, priorities, and actions to align with God's will. Through His Word, we can replace our fears and anxieties with trust and faith in who He is. Then, we will be empowered to resist social pressure and overcome things that tend to cause destruction in our lives.

Today's Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your promise in today's verse. I confess I struggle to discern your will, which is an indicator that I have room to grow in renewing my mind and resisting worldly patterns. Give me wisdom and conviction from your Holy Spirit. Show me what your priorities are. What are the three things you would have me change first to stop conforming to worldly patterns? Wash me in the pure water of your Word, so my mind can be renewed and transformed. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

Appearing nonconformist for the sake of Jesus is not the same as worldly rebellion or acting out to bring attention to ourselves. For followers of Jesus, appearing nonconformist is the result of the world going astray from God's wisdom, so that we seem odd when we seek to align ourselves with it. When the Holy Spirit answers today's prayer for you, check your convictions with Scripture. That is where you will find out whether they are from God, strength to follow through with change, and promises for those who overcome.
