Solomon’s Treasure: A Lesson For Us
Wednesday, July 2
1 Kings 10:22-23 (NKJV)
For the king had merchant ships at sea with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the merchant ships came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and monkeys. So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.”
Devotion
King Solomon’s reign was marked by a splendor that the world had never seen. The Bible tells us that he surpassed every other king in both riches and wisdom. But it’s important to remember how this all began. When God asked Solomon what he desired, Solomon did not ask for wealth, fame, or long life, he asked for wisdom to lead God’s people well.
Because of this selfless request, God not only gave him wisdom but poured out material blessings beyond measure. Merchant ships brought treasures from faraway lands. Gold, silver, and precious things flowed into Jerusalem. Nations marveled at his wealth and sought his counsel.
Yet Solomon’s story reminds us that blessings can become burdens if our hearts drift from the One who gives them. Over time, Solomon’s heart turned toward foreign gods because of his many wives, and the kingdom would later be torn apart.
Solomon’s riches were a direct result of a heart that once put wisdom and God’s will above self-interest. But his downfall was the result of losing sight of that wisdom. God’s blessings are good, but they’re never meant to replace Him as our first love.
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I confess that I have often loved the world and the things of this world. When I think of travel, help me focus on the great commission and the command for your gospel to go to all nations – to every people, tribe, nation, and language. Help me begin in my own circles of influence. Help me be faithful in loving Jesus and sharing his love in daily little things, and help me to grow trustworthy in bigger and bigger things. Grow my faith and goodness to the point where I long not to bring home riches or trinkets from foreign lands, but to where I long to bring the riches of your eternal kingdom with me everywhere I go. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Pastor Franklin reminded us that we cannot bring any material wealth along when we pass from this earth and meet Jesus. Jesus explained the eternal truth that if we seek God first while we are on earth, “all these things,” would follow. This was displayed in Solomon’s life when his heart was right with God. Set aside some time this week to remember and refocus on desiring God first and loving your neighbor as yourself.
