The Beauty Of Submission
Friday, February 14
Ephesians 5:28-30 (NIV)
“In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body.”
Devotion
Dr. Rutland spoke to us Sunday about sacrifice, about the competition of giving in marriage. In the scripture above, Paul gives guidance to husbands and this guidance instructs husbands to give care to their wives in the same way they care for themselves, because of the example we have of this in Christ. Before a husband can do this, they must understand what Christ did.
We see from the gospels that Jesus lived a life fueled by love. He met with the outcasts, healed the lepers, ate with tax collectors, sat with the Samaritan woman, fostered friendships with his disciples, wept with his friends, and he made sure his mother would be taken care of once he was gone. He never turned people away, even when he was tired from a long day of healing and ministry. Then, he went to the cross and gave up his entire life for us sinners. He let his body be beat and broken. He took the insults from the crowd. He showed us what sacrificial love is in the fullest, purest form. And now the Holy Spirit can empower husbands and wives to do the same for each other as we push past our fleshly selfishness.
Whether it’s a husband caring for his wife when she’s sick, holding her when she cries, providing for his family at work, staying up after a long day to work through a problem, or even just planning a date night, these things are bigger than he knows. Each and every time we put our spouse above ourselves, we are emulating the love of Christ. And that is never without reward — even if we don’t see it on this side of eternity.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us what true love looks like through Jesus Christ. Teach us to love with the same sacrificial heart, putting others before ourselves. For those who are married, help them to honor and cherish their spouse, reflecting Your love in their relationship. For those who are single, remind them that they are already deeply loved by You and empower them to love those around them selflessly. May we all grow in a life of love, guided by Your Spirit. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
