The Fast: DAY 2

Monday, January 5

2 Kings 4:1-2 (NIV)

“The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”

Devotion

The widow came to the prophet with nothing but desperation. Debt loomed. Her sons were about to be taken. Her situation felt finished. Yet before God multiplied anything, He spoke a question through the prophet.

“What do you have in the house?”

That one word shifted her focus, from what she lacked to what God could use. The miracle didn’t begin with abundance; it began with obedience to a word.

Fasting brings us into that same moment of clarity. When we Fast, God often speaks not about what we want, but about what we already carry. He reveals what has been overlooked, dismissed, or underestimated.

During a Fast, hunger strips away distractions. It exposes where we’ve depended on ourselves and reminds us where our true source lies. And in that stripped-down place, God speaks.

One word can redirect your faith.

One word can unlock provision.

One word can turn what feels insignificant into overflow.

The widow didn’t argue with the instruction. She followed the word. And as she obeyed, the oil flowed until there were no more empty vessels.

This Fast is not about how much you give up, it’s about how closely you listen. You may feel empty, but God is not limited by emptiness.

You are not far from breakthrough.

You are not behind in the process.

You are one word away.

Today's Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we Fast today, we present You with what we have, even if it feels small. Quiet our hearts so we can hear Your instruction clearly. Give us grace to obey Your Word fully, trusting that one word from You is enough to bring provision and change. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

As you seek the Lord today, declare this “Lord, speak, what are You calling me to trust You with?”
