The Precious Gift Of Today

Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)
“This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Devotion
The psalmist was making an intentional declaration of his boast in God in Psalm 118. It was a celebration of God’s goodness and faithfulness to deliver. In verse 24, he zeroes in on God’s sovereignty and makes a bold statement of trust in Him: “This is the day the Lord has made.” He proclaims that the Lord is in charge of our lives today and then follows with the gratitude that accompanies such faith: “We shall rejoice and be glad in it.” He was not looking at yesterday or tomorrow; the psalmist was focusing on “this day,” the present, which holds such significance.
The most important day is the one we are experiencing right now because the future is affected by yesterday. Today is the gift—fashioned specifically with us in mind, written by Him in His book before any of our days occurred (Psalm 139:16).
If we live, as Pastor Franklin stated, with a “24-hour” focus—as if we did not have tomorrow—how much of our time would not be consumed with ourselves? Would we love a little more, forgive a little faster, and be more intentional in our actions? Unfortunately, some do not discover this until it is too late.
The legacies we leave behind are being built while we are still here. They are made up of the lives we touch, the differences we make, the love we do not hold back, and the faith we hold onto—that’s all happening in “today.” “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17).
For the days we live in, let us be careful not to take the present for granted, but to make each moment count, and to follow Jesus’ example, who said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:4–5).
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me another day to live in Your presence. I commit this day to You. Moment by moment, hour by hour, lead me by Your Holy Spirit, and I pray for the grace to follow You without hesitation. May each day count to glorify Your name. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
God is always in the “now” with you—committed and faithful. Attend to hearing His voice by daily reading the Word of God and waiting on Him in prayer. He wants to begin a conversation. He will speak to you comfort, love, wisdom, and direction. It is the only way to find peace in this life: by abiding with Him in the moment.
