The Seed Of Joy

Friday, October 10

Genesis 21:8-10 (NKJV)

“So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned. And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing. Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.”

Devotion

Isaac was the miracle child greatly desired by his parents, Abraham and Sarah. His birth was a symbol of God’s promises coming to pass. Both Abraham and Sarah had much to be thankful for! Sarah finally saw the fulfillment of motherhood—the joyful experience of nursing her own child at the age of 90 was an amazing accomplishment brought forth by God’s divine plan.

Weaning Isaac represented a festive commemoration significant enough for Abraham to host a feast that validated the importance of weaning a child. The importance of weaning a child, in a biblical sense, refers to the transition from nursing to eating more solid food. This milestone was important both culturally and spiritually, reflecting the child’s continued growth and God’s provision for the family. Abraham and Sarah saw this as an occasion to thank God for sustaining their infant through physical nourishment, but it also reflected their spiritual dependence on God as the source of true contentment, promises, and provision.

This was true joy that overflowed from Abraham’s and Sarah’s hearts. They understood the significance of weaning their miracle child, Isaac, as a continued act of God’s divine providence over their lives.

What is the source of your joy? What does it mean to find true contentment in God? Meditate on Psalm 16:11: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Know that God’s Word makes the path of life visible to us, and it is alive and active, bubbling over with truth, hope, and joy.
