You Are Invited To Enter God's Rest
Sunday, May 24
Isaiah 28:10-12 (NKJV)
“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.” For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear.”
Devotion
There are times to be about our Father’s business, and there are times to rest and to wait for His blessing, direction, and power in the Holy Spirit. The risk of skipping the invitation to enter God’s rest is that we can miss the blessing, direction, and power needed for the task of being about our Father’s business. The Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27). We need to wait upon the Lord to renew our strength, “to mount up with wings as eagles” (Isaiah 40:31).
The disciples were restfully but actively watching, praying, and waiting on the Lord for a full ten days between Jesus telling them to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit and accompanying power to be His witnesses (Acts 1:8) and the coming of the Holy Spirit with power (Acts 2:1–4). Sometimes it takes more than a five-minute prayer—which is not really entering God’s rest or waiting on the Lord—to answer God’s invitation to enter His rest and receive His blessing, direction, and power.
It is unlikely that there is a single set of steps to enter God’s rest and wait upon the Lord. As Pastor mentioned in his message on Sunday, baptism is often key for those who have not obeyed this command of Scripture. Shutting off outside distractions, like the phone or TV, can be important. Praising Jesus, Bible reading, and prayer are likely components. Communion (the Lord’s Supper) can also be an important element. Ask the Lord to show you, through Scripture and the Holy Spirit, how you can reliably enter His rest in this season of your life.
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before You and choose to lay down my striving and self-effort. Teach me how to enter Your rest and to wait on Your timing with a trusting heart. Quiet every distraction and every anxious thought, and fill me with Your peace. I receive Your invitation for rest, refreshing, and renewal through the Holy Spirit. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Intentionally set aside a daily time to “enter God’s rest” by turning off distractions (phone, TV, noise), opening Scripture, and sitting quietly in prayer for at least 10–15 minutes. Ask the Holy Spirit, “What are You saying, and what are You asking me to wait on?”
