A Harmonious Marriage

Matthew 18:20 (NKJV)
“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
Devotion
Today’s reading focuses on the topic of unity and agreement in our Better Together series, viewed through the lens of marriage. In the previous verse, Jesus stated “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven” ( Matthew 18:19 NKJV). The Greek word for “agree” is “to symphonize”, as in musical instruments being “in tune” with each other in perfect harmony.

Every couple has their moments of quarreling, but the fighting will never cease if both sides constantly keep a scoreboard and use it as a weapon against the other. By committing to set a “middle ground” for grace and truth, it creates a welcoming environment for God to help them forgive each other (John 1:16-17). He desires to be invited as the center of their lives so that He can bless, strengthen and heal them (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12), so that they can continue to live in harmony together.

Since men and women were created in the likeness of God, Satan is constantly reminded of God’s creativity and authority, something of which he envied from the beginning (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:18, 21-24; Ezekiel 28:1-19). He came to “steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10, NKJV) that “middle ground” in marriages by stirring up anger within them so that they will see each other as the enemy and fight. But when the couple chooses to come together by touching in agreement to love and forgive, it opens the door for God to fight Satan on their behalf and defeat him for trying to destroy their marriage.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of unity and the power of agreement. Whether in marriage, friendships, or community, we desire to live in harmony with others. Help us to walk in grace and truth, choosing forgiveness over offense and love over pride. For those who are married, be the center of their union, strengthening their bond and restoring any broken places. For those who are single, teach them to cultivate peace in their relationships and prepare their hearts for future partnerships grounded in Your presence. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Single: Reflect on the relationships in your life, family, friends, or colleagues. Identify areas where you can pursue unity and be intentional about fostering peace, practicing forgiveness, and inviting God’s presence into those connections.
