As Far As You Can See
Friday, April 11
Genesis 13:14-15 (NLT) “After Lot had gone, the LORD said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession.”
Devotion
When God gives us a dream, it is typically something that seems far beyond reach. It might be anything from a restored marriage to deliverance from addiction, a new ministry, prodigals coming home, and many things in between. These dreams have tangible pieces, but the overall picture seems impossible. This example is given in the scripture above — Abram could see the land, he could see the tangible part of the promise. But he could not see his descendants or fully fathom what a permanent possession for them would be. Isaac was yet to be born and Abram was already 75 years old. He had to muster up faith (the faith he is remembered for in the book of Hebrews) to believe that both the tangible and intangible pieces of the promises were true.
God is the same God today — He doesn’t just give us dreams that look possible in the natural. His promises show not only that He is a good father, but that He is a mighty one. He continues to give His people abundantly more than we can ask or imagine out of love and power. He continues to be the God that brings down manna so the doubters know He provides and parts the sea so the enemy can understand who holds the victory. He continues to show His mighty hand in the lives of those who seek Him to bring glory to His name.
If we don’t see these truths in our journey to the promise, we have missed the mark. Yes, the promises He has spoken over our lives bring blessings and joy when we finally see how the impossible is made possible with Yahweh. But that’s not the point — the point is who we become in Him on the way there. Abram was given the abundant promise, but Abraham received the fulfillment of it. Abraham became the man who trusted God to the point of being willing to sacrifice his own son! Abraham became who God called him to be on the journey to the promise — the father of many nations. The journey we take with the LORD on the way to the promise being complete is the actual blessing because we go through sanctification, deliverance, and healing from all the things we can not take with us in the fulfillment season. The new land, the new life, the new name we bear can not take on our past hurts and sins — God doesn’t want them there.
If you are walking with God on the way to your promise being fulfilled and it hurts or looks impossible — know you’re not alone. The Bible is full of testimonies like Abraham’s to help us have faith and hope. Believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — the same one who Abraham clung to when He couldn’t see how the promise Isaac and Jacob, and all the descents to come, could be. We see the other side of the impossible scenario Abraham had, so therefore we can trust that He CAN do it again.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the God of impossible promises and miraculous fulfillments. Just as You called Abram to look as far as he could see, help me to lift my eyes above what’s natural and believe You for what only You can do. I surrender every doubt, delay, and disappointment into Your hands. Shape me on the journey, transform my heart, and grow my faith as I walk toward all You’ve prepared for me. May I not only see the promise but become the person who can carry it well. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Take time today to write down the promises you believe God has spoken over your life, even the ones that feel impossible right now. Then ask the Holy Spirit to show you how He’s using your current season to prepare you for the fulfillment of those promises. What part of your character is He building? What needs to be surrendered? Keep your eyes on Him, not just the promise.
