Called Before Birth To Serve Jesus
Saturday, September 23
Psalm 139:13 NIV
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
Devotion
The devil would have us think that believing God is an act of pride when God says to us, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” (Jeremiah 1:5) But believing God is simply trust and never pride. God confirms our calling with a third witness, “For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) The work of evangelism needs no other qualification beyond trust and surrender to Jesus.
God is eager to give His Holy Spirit to flow in you and through you. Have you asked? Have you surrendered in water baptism? Have you eagerly desired spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy by asking for it specifically, as Scripture instructs? (1 Corinthians 14:1) We were created and prepared in advance to do good works in the power of the Holy Spirit and not in the strength of our flesh. As Scripture says, “'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.” (Zechariah 4:6)
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You that You knit me together in my mother's womb and called me even then to follow and serve Jesus. I confess that I too often labor in human strength without depending on Your Holy Spirit. Fill me anew with Your Holy Spirit and give me the gift of prophecy, especially for the work of evangelism. Let the secrets of hearts be laid bare so seekers and unbelievers fall down and worship God exclaiming, “God is really among you.” In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen
Apply It Today
If there are steps of trust or obedience you have not taken, are you willing for the sake of the One who formed you and sees you? Are you willing to ask Him today? Be honest. Take the next step today, or confess that you are not willing and ask God to work in you to will and to do according to His purpose (Philippians 2:13).
