Calling Those Things
Thursday, April 10
Genesis 17:3-6 (NKJV) “Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.”
Devotion
When God wants to make a major course correction, He speaks it into existence first, like He did in the beginning of creation. God spoke into the darkness and void, ‘Let there be light, and there was light’. Likewise, it came a time when God spoke into the childless lives of Abram and Sarai, changing their names from Abram (‘exalted father’) to Abraham (‘father of many nations’) and Sarai (princess) to Sarah (‘princess of nations’) Genesis 17:15. Each time their new name was mentioned, the new meaning was being spoken into existence, and as they heard their new names, they also began to change their perception of themselves and increase their faith in God’s vision for their lives.
God intended to make a major course correction. He was about to cut a covenant with Abraham, one that would produce generations and make an entryway for God’s seed - His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Savior, to enter our world and provide the way for mankind’s salvation.
Romans 4:17-22 confirms, “(as it is written: ‘I have made you a father of many nations), in the presence of Him whom he believed – God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did, who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about one hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and was fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Our own salvation came by the same means, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10)
When God speaks His vision and purpose into our hearts – we dare not need to be afraid, but only believe. Speak it aloud, as God did against the void and darkness. We shall see every answered prayer through, as we stand in perseverance and in faith believing that what God has said is true.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
We thank You that You chose Abraham to direct his children after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that You brought about for Abraham what You promised him. We confess that often we fantasize that You will bring about Your promises for us even if we do not do what is right or just and we do not direct our children to do what is right or just. Help us to fear You more than we fear man so that we keep our promises to You, in accordance with Your blessings to us in Jesus, our Messiah. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
