Day-To-Day Lease
Thursday, December 19
Proverbs 27:1 (NKJV)
“Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.”
Devotion
When someone leases an apartment they contract to use the structure for a specific term or time period. When the term is over, the tenant vacates the structure and it’s returned to the true owner. Lease terms can be long (many years) or they can be short. Some apartments lease on a term that’s called month-to-month. This means that each month the lease renews for an additional month, but there’s no obligation for the owner or tenant to extend the lease after that.
God grants everyone alive a new lease on life each day. The structure being leased is life. With this lease, God can terminate it whenever He wants. There is no guarantee of an extension. It’s a day-to-day lease on life.
Both Solomon in Proverbs 27:1 and James warn about arrogantly focusing on the activities of tomorrow rather than the current day: “… you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-14). For this reason, God wants His Children to live each day trusting Him and not worrying about tomorrow. In fact, Jesus asked: will worrying add a single hour to life? (see Mathew 6:27).
Although, when the lease is finally terminated, and the structure must be vacated, God’s Children should have great comfort. “For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1). Try not to worry about tomorrow. An extension is not guaranteed. Instead, focus on making the most of God’s day-to-day lease on life.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of today and the opportunity to live this moment for Your glory. Help me to trust You fully with my life, knowing that each day is a precious lease granted by Your grace. Teach me to focus on today, to seek Your will, and to serve You with all my heart. Remove my anxieties about tomorrow and help me to walk in faith, knowing that Your plans are perfect and Your timing is best. May my life be a reflection of gratitude and dependence on You. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
