Do Not Be Terrified

Luke 21:20-24 ((NKJV)
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Devotion
Jesus foretold these events to the disciples, events which began to be fulfilled around 70 AD when the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, and the Jewish people were scattered, killed, and enslaved for the second time in their history. Jesus also told them, and us, of future natural phenomena, evil human behavior, and deceptions that will paralyze people with fear. But in this same conversation, Jesus said, 'Do not be terrified.' Those who belong to Jesus can take comfort that he told us ahead of time. He will not leave or forsake us, and his return is certain.

Practically, how do we live in such times? First, prioritize a personal relationship with Jesus, who is God, made possible by his death and resurrection. Secondly, do not get weighed down by obsessing over the cares of this life, or running after the latest end-times sensationalism. Finally, pray regularly that God will help you to be ready to stand before Jesus.

Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I confess I don't feel ready for great distress upon the earth, but thank You that Jesus has warned us ahead of time. Help me remember to cry out in what I consider little trials and challenges, so my heart can learn to be faithful in crying out, making it second nature as difficulties and persecutions grow fiercer prior to Jesus' return. Help me be ready. Show me how to be ready. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
