Faithful From Beginning To End

Nehemiah 7:3 (NKJV)
“And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.”
Devotion
When we read the book of Nehemiah, we see a faithful servant of the Lord. In chapter 1, we find him serving as the cupbearer for the king of Susa when he learns that the Jewish remnant was in great trouble because Jerusalem’s walls had been broken down and its gates burned. This troubled him greatly, so he prayed and fasted, seeking God on behalf of the Jews.

As we read further, we learn that he approached the king and asked for favor, that he may go and help rebuild the city walls. The king granted his request and Nehemiah set out to accomplish the task.
Upon his arrival in Jerusalem, he spent several nights inspecting the walls, then went to the leaders of the city and told them his plan. He made assignments for each section of the city, so that the walls could be rebuilt, and the city could be secure.

There were times when the people did not believe they could accomplish the task, but Nehemiah kept encouraging them. They had opposition and threats, but Nehemiah did not let it stop their progress. Weapons were formed against them, but God gave them victory over every obstacle and every enemy. As Nehemiah was faithful, so was God.

Chapter 7 picks up with the walls having been rebuilt and the doors installed, but Nehemiah does not stop there. He appointed gatekeepers and leaders, instructing them as we read in our main text.
Nehemiah did not just build the wall and leave. He made sure he followed through with all God had told him, just as we must do when He gives us instructions. A call from God is rarely about completing one task and being finished. It is a continuous work of faithfully serving the Lord from beginning to end, wherever that end lies.

Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
The God of the Heavens, the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps Your gracious covenant with those who love You and keep Your commandments. Let Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear Your servant’s prayer. I confess my sins and the sins of my family and my nation. We have sinned against You and ask Your forgiveness. (Excerpt of Nehemiah’s prayer in chapter 1). I ask that You give me Your wisdom and determination to accomplish with excellence all You have for me to do, just as Nehemiah did. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
