Guarding Against The Spirit Of Leviathan

Thursday, May 23

Job 41:33-34 (NIV)
“Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear. It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.”
Devotion
In the book of Job, we encounter a vivid description of the leviathan, a formidable creature that epitomizes pride and arrogance. God uses this imagery to remind Job of His power and sovereignty, challenging human pride and self-reliance. The leviathan is portrayed as an invincible being, one that "looks down on all that are haughty" and "is king over all that are proud." This powerful metaphor serves as a warning against the destructive nature of pride.

Pride is a subtle yet pervasive sin. It can manifest in various ways, self-righteousness, arrogance, or an inflated sense of self-importance. When we allow pride to take root in our hearts, it blinds us to our need for God and separates us from His grace. The spirit of leviathan, symbolic of unchecked pride, positions itself as the ruler over those who exalt themselves, leading them further away from humility and submission to God.

To fight this spirit, we can do the following;
1. Regularly examine your heart for traces of pride. Ask God to reveal any areas where you may have allowed arrogance or self-reliance to overshadow your dependence on Him.

2. Practice humility in your daily interactions. Recognize the value and contributions of others.

3. Remember that true strength and security come from God alone.

4. Encourage those around you to adopt an attitude of humility. Be a living example of Christ-like humility, showing others the beauty and strength that come from a heart surrendered to God.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
I never want to trample on the blood of Jesus by allowing the sin of pride and all it produces to become a part of who I am. I long to live and be of godly character, always seeing You and others as more important than myself. Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice so that He could save the world. I ask that I give myself as a daily sacrifice to You so that I may be used as Your instrument to lead others to the salvation He provided. Thank You for giving me strength and wisdom to walk according to Your plan. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

Make a list of any ungodly character that you have portrayed in the last month, be it pride, selfishness, arrogance, harshness, etc. Pray over each one, asking God for His wisdom to help you overcome these obstacles in your walk with Him.
