THE FAST - DAY 15
Sunday, January 19
James 5:16 (NIV)
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Devotion
In moments of uncertainty, struggle, or even joy, we often hear the phrase, “Just pray about it.” While it can sound like a simple response, James 5:16 reminds us that prayer is not just a ritual; it is a holy connection, a mighty weapon, and a tool for transformation.
Fervent prayer, the kind that is wholehearted and persistent, has the ability to move mountains because it aligns us with God’s will. It’s not about how eloquent the words are but about the faith and sincerity with which they are offered. When you pray earnestly, it ignites heaven’s power to act on earth.
Consider Elijah, a man just like us, who prayed fervently for rain to stop and for it to return (James 5:17-18). His prayers were effective not because he was perfect but because his heart was devoted to God, and his prayers were aligned with God’s purpose. This is a reminder that your prayers have the same potential.
Fervent prayer also brings healing, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. James encourages us to confess our sins and pray for one another. This act of humility and intercession invites restoration and freedom, breaking the chains of guilt, shame, and brokenness.
As believers, we must remain persistent in prayer, even when answers seem delayed. The enemy tries to discourage us by whispering lies that our prayers are ineffective, but the truth is this: every prayer of faith stirs heaven.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the privilege of prayer and the example of Elijah. I confess I am often surprised by Your answers to prayer. Build my faith as I hear and read Scripture. Show me the prayers You want to answer for me personally and also through me for others. Give me the gift of prophecy for the matter of prayer. Show me first the sins You want me to repent of, and the covenant promises You want to bring to my life, so that I can pursue them with confession and prayer as described in this verse. And show me also the sins and covenant promises You want those around me to repent of and grow in so that I can pray for those also, and as appropriate bring encouragement.
In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Here is a caution and a precious promise: “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13, NIV). If you are in a desert in some area of your life, pray fervently that God will show you the path to His watering and life. Be open for God to show you if there is an area of repentance or obedience that will open the gates of blessing for you.
