The Two-Fold Grace
Saturday, September 9
Acts 16:33 NKJV
And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized.
Devotion
Today’s theme scripture is a beautiful display of grace. One man (the jailer), moved from inflicting punishment and judgment on the accused to showing them reverential kindness (deep solemn respect). While the other men (Paul and Silas), by the power of the Holy Spirit, were moved with compassion to not only forgive the jailer but extend God’s message of reconciliation and salvation to his entire household.
God’s grace at work in us, when extended, brings mutual benefits. The two-fold effect transforms our lives as we move in obedience to God and the lives of those around us. It is impossible to be touched by grace and remain the same. This is why even the undeserving actually do deserve grace.
Paul and Silas, after being wrongfully imprisoned, beaten, and punished, could have walked out of the prison gates with their heads held high, ready for vengeance. But because they were moved to action by grace, their greatest concern was the salvation of humanity because the gospel is summed up in this: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your house” (Acts 16:31).
It’s high time we stopped underestimating the power of grace unleashed. It is not up to us to conclude who is worthy or unworthy, but it is our job to believe that the very same grace that redeemed us and changed us can do the same for others.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for my salvation. Thank You for the grace You extended toward me through the gift of Your precious son Jesus. Lord, I pray that You help me never to underestimate the power of Your saving grace. Help me to remember that grace unleashed can transform even those who have hurt me, those who seem undeserving, and those in need of a savior. Use me as Your vessel to deliver this message of reconciliation. I will not hold back or waste my grace. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Identify a person you may have written off for one reason or another. How can you extend grace to them today? You could start by praying for their salvation and then take it a step further to ask what needs they have in an effort to serve them.
