Truth Or Dare

Job 41:5-8 (ESV)
“Will you play with him as with a bird, or will you put him on a leash for your girls? Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? Can you fill his skin with harpoons or his head with fishing spears? Lay your hands on him; remember the battle; you will not do it again!”
Devotion
The Bible reveals Leviathan as; the accuser, the dragon, and the devil, which is satan, himself. Job knew exactly to whom God was referring when He spoke of him. In the verses above, God asked Job if he could control the source of his trouble and subdue Leviathan by any of the means mentioned. The answer, of course, is Job could not control him, as only God can save us from satan and his traps.
In Hebrew, Leviathan's name means, “the twisting one” and in Genesis 3:1, he is referred to as a cunning serpent. Isn’t that what satan does so well? He twists the truth like the cunning serpent that tempted Eve, to try to control and manipulate us into believing his lies. He will make sin look so enticing as he offers us a worry-free life full of carefree fun, leading to a rebellious life of pride and haughtiness. We must be wise to his schemes though; as he comes only to kill, steal, and destroy us, our families, our churches, and all that we hold dear. (See John 10:10)
Satan tries to entice us into an eternal game of truth or dare, a game where the losers spend an eternity with him in hell. Rather than falling for his deception, let’s look to Jesus Christ our Savior, Who offers us an eternal covenant which he will never break, leading to our reward of eternity with him in Heaven. While satan gives us lies, Jesus offers us truth, and the strength to overcome the tactics and snares of the enemy. Because God, our creator, is sovereign, we must submit to Him and His ways. Like Job, we will face struggles that come because of this fallen world, but we must humble ourselves and get on our knees before God in prayer while holding to His hand as we walk through them. Even when we do not understand the reasons for our trials, it is imperative that we stay humble, submit to God and trust in His plans.
As God’s children, we know we are on the winning side, because the story ends with Jesus defeating satan for all eternity. “And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his heads seven diadems. . . And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” (Revelation 12:3, 9).
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I humble myself before You and seek Your forgiveness for the times I have given in to the enemy’s temptation to play eternal truth or dare. I admit that I have believed the lies of the enemy and lived a selfish life allowing pride and arrogance to sneak in. You have said, “Seek my face,” My heart replies to you, “Your face, Lord, I do seek.” I humbly seek Your power in ridding my life of Leviathan that I may live as a servant to You, putting others before myself. Help my plans, my hopes, my daily life, and my future to exemplify You in every way. Even though I am unworthy, I long to be Your servant, Father. Use me, Lord, for Your glory that I may lead others to You. I humbly ask, in the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
To stand against the enemy, it is of vital importance that you develop a continual life of communion with your Heavenly Father. He said in Jeremiah 29:13, that you will find Him when you seek Him with all your heart. Look at your calendar now and determine a time each day that you can get alone with God, put away all distractions, and spend time with Him. Set a reminder alarm on your phone and don’t let the hindrances of life distract you from that time. Begin each time by committing to God beginning your prayer with, “You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, I commit to seek.’” (Psalm 27:8)
