Introduction

In a world that often feels chaotic and directionless, it is reassuring to remember that "God Still Makes Stars." This message, rooted in the biblical teachings of Philippians 2:12-16, reminds us of God's enduring presence and purpose in our lives. Just as stars are born through a delicate balance of forces, our spiritual growth and impact depend on the balance of divine "push and pull" in our lives.

This sermon explores four key aspects of this balance: the push and pull of purpose, gratitude, wisdom, and the Word. Through these elements, we can shine brightly in a "warped and crooked generation," fulfilling God's good purpose and becoming the stars He created us to be.

  • What stood out to you in Sunday’s message?

Primary Scripture Passage

 Philippians 2:12-16

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

Letter to the Church

Philippians is a letter written by Paul from a prison with much warmth and concern. He appreciates the church of Philippi for their obedience to God while he was with them and reminds them to continue to obey God and work out their own salvation with godly fear and reverence.

Having this godly fear and reverence is very important in every believer’s life. It’s not enough to just be saved and live complacently. We are called to work it out and live in holiness, reverence and selflessly serve God.

  • Discuss the significance of having godly fear and reverence in your life. How does it impact your relationship with God and others?

Paul also wrote in Ephesians 6:17 to put on the helmet of salvation. When we do that, we put on Christ Himself, and he protects not just our mind and body but also our entire being from the Enemy. We are equipped and empowered for battle not only to face the enemy and fight but also to live a life that’s focused on living for God and Eternity - a promised future with Him.

  • Paul writes in Ephesians 6:17 about putting on the helmet of salvation. How do you actively "put on" Christ in your life, and in what ways does this protect and empower you?

 His Good Purpose

Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

The purpose that Paul speaks of is not our own selfish needs, plans and purposes, but His divine purpose for us on this earth. The purpose of Paul’s letter was to teach and remind the church about the nature and work of Christ. The humility and selfless service demonstrated by Christ to one and all is highlighted for us all to emulate. His good purpose for each one of us to be raised up as shining stars in this wicked and dark world.

  • Reflect on the example of humility and selfless service demonstrated by Christ, as highlighted by Paul. How can you emulate these qualities in your own life and community?

 God at Work Within Us

As we journey through our week, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the demands of life and our personal struggles. We might wonder if we have the strength or the will to continue pursuing a path of righteousness. Philippians 2:13 offers us profound reassurance: it is not by our strength alone that we navigate our spiritual journey, but by the power of God working within us.

Philippians 2:13 "For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."

God doesn't merely call us to live out His purposes; He empowers us to do so. This verse reminds us that our desires to do good and our actions toward fulfilling God's will are divinely inspired and sustained. We are not alone in our efforts.

  • Can you share a time when you felt God's power working within you to accomplish something you didn't think you could do on your own?
  • How does knowing that God is actively involved in your life change the way you approach your daily tasks and challenges?
  • What steps can you take to ensure that your will and actions align with God's purpose for your life?

Shine Like Stars

Philippians 2:14-16a “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.”

Philippians 2:14-16 calls us to live without grumbling or arguing, striving to be blameless and pure in a corrupt world. By holding firmly to the word of life, we reflect God's light, shining like stars in the darkness. This passage encourages us to maintain a positive and grateful spirit, showcasing the transformative power of God's Word in our lives.

  • What are some common sources of grumbling and arguing in your daily life, and how can you address them?
  • How does living without grumbling or arguing help us become "blameless and pure"?
  • In what ways can we hold firmly to the word of life in our current generation?
  • What does it mean to you to "shine like stars" in a warped and crooked generation?
  • Can you share a time when maintaining a positive and grateful spirit made a significant impact on your life or those around you?

Conclusion

As we contemplate the push and pull of purpose, gratitude, wisdom, and the Word, we realize the intricate balance God designed for our spiritual lives. Maintaining this balance, like the stars, ensures we neither burn out from relentless giving nor collapse from excessive taking.

First, the push and pull of purpose drives us to act in accordance with God's will. Next, the push and pull of gratitude fosters a heart full of thanksgiving and contentment. Third, the push and pull of wisdom encourages us to remain open and teachable. Finally, the push and pull on the Word anchors us in the truth and power of the Scriptures.

Embracing this divine balance allows us to shine brightly in a dark world, fulfilling our God-given potential. Remember, God still makes stars. He seeks to transform each of us into beacons of hope and light. Shine like the stars, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.
